Perhaps there was an element of masochistic asceticism to going through the endless motions and watching for the colour to change. I know there are layers of metaphor at the heart of alchemy and that lead into gold is the alchemist transcending self somehow and maybe this is a good way of looking at this kind of seemingly pointless bullshit.
