If you were born in the morning you might be very old and rich by the time the night started, and hence able to exert a lot of power and influence. This effect would only increase over time as wealth got stratified.noismshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09933436762608669966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-58830316989241155302016-11-14T17:13:45.168+08:002016-11-14T17:13:45.168+08:00Howl's Moving Castle?Howl's Moving Castle?noismshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09933436762608669966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-66791784194164426312016-11-14T17:13:23.401+08:002016-11-14T17:13:23.401+08:00Yeah, geothermal energy could provide advanced ste...Yeah, geothermal energy could provide advanced steampunkish technology for some lucky societies. noismshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09933436762608669966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-6389225884764270972016-11-14T17:12:43.585+08:002016-11-14T17:12:43.585+08:00Interesting questions. I have been doing a bit of thinking about measuring time in relation to one of my other ideas, the Fixed World.

There would presumably be lots of different ways of measuring time - by season being the most simple. People would also presumably use hourglasses and other tools. I quite like more esoteric ideas like using heart beats (as I wrote a post about somewhere), or having a certain lengthy epic poem which everybody in society has memorized, so two people could say: "I'll see you at line 3344" (or whatever) and then they would both go about their business, reciting the poem in their own mind, knowing that they had to meet by the time they get to the specified line.noismshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09933436762608669966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-6516152026902341482016-11-14T17:10:20.877+08:002016-11-14T17:10:20.877+08:00Thanks!Thanks!noismshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09933436762608669966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-27399266342891904012016-11-13T07:54:04.658+08:002016-11-13T07:54:04.658+08:00You could have this cycle of generations... intrig...You could have this cycle of generations... intriguing.

AncalagonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-44314033288312729382016-11-13T06:20:43.686+08:002016-11-13T06:20:43.686+08:00I'm glad my previous comments were of help.
O...I'm glad my previous comments were of help.

One thing I hadn't done is well, the math. At the equator, a city/group/etc would have to move about 20 km/year to stay "put". This seems very possible over easy terrain, but when obstacles are added... much more challenging.

A great city like this might be besieged at one point...

AncalagonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-47168570989125601892016-11-12T23:42:56.812+08:002016-11-12T23:42:56.812+08:00Makes me wonder about caste systems. In those bastions that stay put, given a 100-year cycle and approximately 100-year lifespans (-ish), how are those who are born at the beginning of the night going to be treated differently from the glorious ones born at the break of day?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-19361883719894045012016-11-11T05:11:24.475+08:002016-11-11T05:11:24.475+08:00Some permanent (even if mobile) city or other sett...Some permanent (even if mobile) city or other settlement would be pretty important when it comes to scientific advancement. If it's all nomadic in nature, all kinds of research (and thus, invention) would be really difficult. You kind of have to establish a permanent and more or less stable environment for that. A society that had to keep moving all the time would have a hard time with something like that.

Same goes for traditional kind of magic, I'd imagine. Maybe wizards invest a lot of resources into mobile shelters? I can definitely dig a walking wizard's tower.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-2541944468382283652016-11-11T02:29:00.593+08:002016-11-11T02:29:00.593+08:00Magic could also provide faux-sunlight for vast un...Magic could also provide faux-sunlight for vast underground farms during the night. Maybe strains of edible fungi are cultivated that thrive in low light. Subsurface dwellers could build huge underground reservoirs to hold liquid water. Pockets of magma might be located and channelled to provide warmth.

Lots of "cool" possibilities with the long night/winter.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07597331991297223762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-86439357139661119522016-11-11T01:46:36.413+08:002016-11-11T01:46:36.413+08:00How would the measurement of time and recording of...How would the measurement of time and recording of history be impacted/subdivided? A lot can happen in a 100-year day. Also, I've been thinking about how military campaigns would be altered without the respite of cyclical seasons. (sorry if this has already been discussed!)

Love the idea of a magically-sustained city raiding the "diggers". Assuming "standard" lifespans apply, the adventure could be generational, with grandchildren of the original PCs facing the worst of the deepest night, and their grandchildren preparing for the dawn.
