Memory, Sorrow, Thorn is certainly an ASOIAF precursor - it becomes obvious in Legends, the novella collection where both have an entry.

I think McCaffrey has a little longer-term staying power than, say, Eddings.

There's a "semi-series" from that era which I absolutely love - the Drenai Cycle by David Gemmell. First read the first four at age 10/11, reread them at 20ish, and at 30 have now bought all the other books in the cycle and have read most of them. It's frankly weird to realize how much they have influenced by actual morals and beliefs. The top two reviews of "Legend" on Goodreads are very informative as to why the series is special (and the top review, weirdly, is by Patrick Rothfuss).Owen Edwardshttp://haughtyfantasy.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-82839776831118404192017-06-27T03:57:03.058+08:002017-06-27T03:57:03.058+08:00I've heard that the books of the fallen starte...I've heard that the books of the fallen started out as DnD but moved into their own home brew rules. They've had their time, and now that they are fading away I feel that the fantasy genre may finally see some interesting changes as it takes its baby steps away from Tolkien's shadow. However, I can't quite quell the hope that one day in the future some new author will come along and put out a whole new spin on this older style of high fantasy. I suspect the possibility of that ever happening would be close to zero, but who knows.strangeleaveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04583458059079778380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2513019539869706574.post-84679838789771136382017-06-07T05:01:07.542+08:002017-06-07T05:01:07.542+08:00I loved Memory, Sorrow & Thorn when I was abou...I loved Memory, Sorrow & Thorn when I was about 14, I think I might even have read it twice.
