Each Sunday (well, almost each Sunday), I share seven links to items of interest that have crossed my eye across the preceding week. Here are this week's:
- Do you know about d4 Caltrops? You ought to know about d4 Caltrops.
- Do you know about the Duchy of Athens? History is impossibly rich and layered; I may write a full post on this during the week.
- This is oldish news, but we can I think now reconcile ourselves to the fact that A Song of Ice and Fire will never be completed.
- Do you know about Journey Into Space? Listening to it as a small boy on the radio in the 1980s (re-broadcast after originally having come out in the 1950s) I was terrified and thrilled. See if it still works.
- Mythlands of Erce keeps on putting out the good stuff, blogging like it's 2008!
- Do you remember Kabuki Kaiser? He still exists.
- I enjoyed reading about techno-barbarians at Lacrimis Draconis. You may too.
I was completely independently thinking the other day about how there's a whole story to be told about knights and mercenaries carving duchies out of Greece in the wake of the Fourth Crusade. Byzantium is fascinating because it brings together so many different medieval elements, everything from Saxons to steppe nomads all hanging out and killing each other in the same zone.
ReplyDeleteYes. It's a really fascinating period, and not well known at all.
Delete> Do you know about the Duchy of Athens?
ReplyDelete> Only through Shakespeare ... but my first name was a compromise between a Catalan dad and an English mum, so I might be named after one of the Almogavers like Roger de Flor or Roger de Lluria. Very interested to read the article you have brewing!
The Almogavers are also an article in themselves.
DeleteAh hey! I'm so pleased you enjoyed that post on the techno-barbarians and thanks very much for the signal boost!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
